Occurrences
Amber is Mined on two areas in the Dominican Republic, Major Deposits are Located in the Cordillera Septentrional from Santiago de los Caballeros to Puerto Plata, Secondary Deposits are located in the eastern part of the island around Sabana de la Mar and El Valle.
According to the excat location of origin, Dominican Amber occurs with a wide variety of particularities, like solid and reflected colors, hardness, type of inclusions and a very specific smell percepible during the grinding process and even during the polishing one. Hardness between Amber from the deposits of La Cordillera Septentrional (Around Santiago de los Caballeros) and the one from from Hato Mayor Province (In the Eastern part of the Island) is particularly obvious, Amber from "Santiago" area being by far a harder material than amber extracted in the east area. General aspect of the rough Amber Nuggets as well is a very clear identification factor of the deposit origin for any experienced actor.
